🔤 Lesson 1 — The Musical Alphabet

Mochi says: Music only uses seven letters — A B C D E F G — then it starts again! No H, no I. Round and round like a merry-go-round! 🎠

Say them going up: A B C D E F G → back to A. And going down: G F E D C B A. Every note on the stave is one of these seven letters.

🌈 Going up the stave, the letters go forward (A→B→C…). Going down, they go backward (C→B→A…).

🐼 Bao's tip: A note sits either on a line (the line goes through its tummy) or in a space (it floats between two lines). Lines and spaces each have their own letters!

🎼 Lesson 2 — Reading the Treble Clef

Bao says: The swirly treble clef 🎼 is also called the G clef — its curl hugs the line for G! High notes live here. 🎈

Here is a note sitting on the second line — the one the clef curls around. That's G!

🐱 Watch out: Middle C sits just below the treble stave on its own little ledger line:

🎵 Lesson 3 — Reading the Bass Clef

Mochi says: The bass clef is the F clef — its two dots hug the F line! Low, rumbly notes live down here. 🐻

This note is on the bottom line of the bass stave. That's G!

🐼 Watch out: Middle C sits just above the bass stave on its own ledger line — the same C from the treble clef, holding hands in the middle!

🎯 Lesson 4 — Sharps, Flats & the Golden Rule

Bao says: Accidentals are little signs that change a note's pitch. This is where lots of people slip up — let's get it right! ✨

The signs you need for Grade 5:

Sharp (#) — makes a note higher by a semitone.
Flat (b) — makes a note lower by a semitone.
Natural — cancels a sharp or flat.
Double sharp (written x) — up by TWO semitones.
Double flat (written bb) — down by TWO semitones.

⭐ GOLDEN RULE #1 — On the stave, the accidental sign always goes BEFORE the note (to its left), sitting on the same line or space. Never after it! ⭐

✅ Correct — sign on the left, then the note:

⭐ GOLDEN RULE #2 — When we write the name, the letter comes first, then the accidental: F# (say "F sharp"), Bb (say "B flat"). ⭐

🐱 Easy way to remember: On the stave the sign leads the way (it's on the left, like it's pulling the note along 🐾). In the name the letter is the boss and comes first (F#, not #F).
