These are best friends but not the same thing:
๐ฅ Beat = the steady, even knocking that holds the music together (like a clock: tick-tick-tick).
๐ต Rhythm = the pattern of long and short notes that dance on top of the beat.
Music is chopped up into little boxes called bars. A line called a bar line ends each box. Inside one piece, every bar usually holds the same number of beats, so all the notes in a bar add up to the same total. ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ
A time signature is two numbers stacked like a fraction at the very start of the music. It's the music's rule-maker! It tells us how many beats are in each bar and what type of beat they are.
The top number simply counts the beats in each bar. Top number is 3? Three beats per bar. Easy peasy! ๐
The bottom number is a secret code for the note value. Think of the note "family fractions":
| Bottom number | Type of beat | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Minim (half note) | |
| 4 | Crotchet (quarter note) | |
| 8 | Quaver (eighth note) | |
| 16 | Semiquaver (sixteenth note) |
Top = 4 โ four beats per bar. Bottom = 4 โ crotchet beats. So every bar has 4 crotchet beats! ๐
The letter that looks like a C means Common Time, and it's exactly the same as 4/4 โ the most common time signature of all! ๐ผ
A C with a line cutting through it means Cut Time (sometimes called alla breve). The line "cuts" the time in half โ it means 2/2: two minim beats per bar.
Examples: 2/4 and 2/2. The pattern is STRONG โ weak, over and over.
Examples: 3/4 and 3/2. The pattern is STRONG โ weak โ weak ("oom-pah-pah", like a waltz!). ๐
Example: 4/4. Beat 1 is the strongest, beat 3 is also strong-ish, and beats 2 & 4 are weak. A March feels like this!
In simple time, each main beat divides into two equal parts. The top number is 2, 3, or 4. Examples: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 2/2, 3/8.
One crotchet beat = two quavers . Split in two! โ๏ธ
In compound time, each main beat divides into three equal parts. The top number is 6, 9, or 12. Examples: 6/8, 9/8, 12/8, 6/16.
The main beat is a dotted note. One dotted crotchet = three quavers . Split in three! ๐
| Time sig | Simple or Compound | Main beats | Beat note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 | Simple duple | 2 | crotchet |
| 34 | Simple triple | 3 | crotchet |
| 44 | Simple quadruple | 4 | crotchet |
| 68 | Compound duple | 2 | dotted crotchet |
| 98 | Compound triple | 3 | dotted crotchet |
| 128 | Compound quadruple | 4 | dotted crotchet |
If the top number is 5 or 7 (not divisible by 2, 3, or 4), it's an irregular time signature, like 5/4 or 7/8. Wobbly and fun! ๐
The golden rule: beam (group) the notes together within each beat. This makes it super clear where every beat starts, so a musician can read the rhythm in a flash. ๐
โ
Good grouping: you can instantly see each beat.
โ Bad grouping: one giant beam hides where the beats are โ confusing!
